GETTING A BIT ROWDY: Howdy, Lamborghini Aventador S
Raucous. Nonsensical. Symphonic.
Today’s supercar market is flooded with competition, with an array of brands attempting to grab a slice and become the next best thing. In an emerging world of hybridisation, environmentalism and forward thinking, it’s refreshing to take a step back; to immerse oneself with the simplicity of a true supercar. The easiest way to do so? Come face to face with the definitive supercar archetype; the Lamborghini Aventador.
Introduced as an updated version of the original LP700-4, the Aventador S is arguably the pinnacle of supercars. Just take a look at it! It’s one of those cars that just look fast standing still. Not many cars have the same effect as these do. When the original Aventador was first introduced way back in 2011, shockwaves were sent around the world. It was truly a car that redefined what, at the time, people would call supercars. The ostentatious styling, the raw V12 engine, the technological advancements; when it came to making a statement, the Aventador certainly did just that. As time went on, Lamborghini introduced new editions of the Aventador, including the roadster and the extreme SV variant, until 2016 saw the reveal of this, the Aventador S. Whilst of course, Lambo went on to later reveal the ridiculous SVJ and Ultimae, the S is the most drivable car in the lineup, and it might just be the one that I’d choose.
It takes the original design language alongside the 6.5 litre, naturally aspirated V12 from the LP700, but increases the power output from 700 to 740 horsepower. It’s a complete reimagination of the platform, being lighter, more responsive and with more power, thanks to an upgraded ECU, an optimised exhaust system as well as a revised intake manifold. As a resultant, the Aventador S is capable of launching from 0-100kmh in a mere 2.9 seconds, before stretching to an impressive top speed in excess of 350 kmh. It's not just quick; it’s blisteringly fast, and paired with the iconic exhaust note, driving it is the kind of experience you never want to end.
Newly introduced in the Aventador S, Lamborghini’s innovative dynamic steering system provides sharper cornering and better handling through four wheel steering. Due to this, it can realistically be driven spiritedly through the hills, despite its ridiculous width and length. Whilst it does handle really quite well, the true enjoyment of the Aventador S comes through its raucous attitude. It's a workout to drive; every shift snaps your neck thanks to the dated single clutch gearbox, but the awe-inspiring noise that emits on every acceleration makes you come back for more and more. It truly does hook you.
But power and noise isn’t all that makes the Aventador S the supercar it is. Let’s talk design. Lamborghini has always been synonymous with outrageous aesthetics, and the Aventador S takes this to a whole new level. Its sharp, aerodynamic lines don’t just look stunning - they serve an important purpose. The bodywork is designed to reduce drag and optimise downforce, whilst taking inspiration from menacing symbols such as fighter jets and sharks to result in an indisputable aggressive car. It just screams “get out of my way”. Up front, the angular lines create a bold snarl, while the rear features a large, sculpted diffuser and an active spoiler for added downforce. Every inch was designed to gain maximum attention, and to explicitly emphasise its place at the top of the supercar food chain.
Technologically, numerous enhancements are made. The S is packed with cutting-edge technology to ensure that driving is as exhilarating yet manageable as possible. The car features a fully digital cockpit with customisable interface, allowing the driver to keep an eye on crucial performance metrics. Whilst the interior retained the familiar Aventador styling, the minor adjustments are refreshing. The windscreen is dramatically slanted, and the roof line is really low, and makes you feel as if the car is daring you to drive it hard.
Whilst the Aventador S does have more extreme and sought after big brothers such as the SV and SVJ, the S strikes a perfect balance between manageable usability and heart-pumping power. It’s the perfect choice for someone who wants the thrill of a supercar without breaching into track-focused cars, which at the end of the day, are borderline unusable.
The 2017 Lamborghini Aventador S is the epitome of a supercar, in every aspect. From its blistering, orchestral V12 engine through to its flawless design, cutting edge technology and razor-sharp handling, there's nothing on its level. It’s the perfect blend of form and function, raw power and sophistication. And nothing; and I mean nothing, will beat this experience.
