GYMKHANA DOWN UNDER: Hoonigan Brings Infamous Stunt Series to AUS
Gymkhana has finally landed in Australia, not as a teaser or rumour, but as a full-scale production under the Hoonigan banner. Titled Gymkhana: Aussie Shred, the latest chapter sees esteemed stuntman Travis Pastrana at the wheel, unleashing controlled chaos across some of the country’s most recognisable and remote locations.

Pastrana pilots the Subaru “Brataroo”, a wildly re-engineered, turbocharged homage to the classic BRAT/Brumby, purpose-built for Gymkhana’s unique mix of stunt driving, drifting and precision control. The choice of both driver and machine reinforces Gymkhana’s core philosophy that displays spectacle backed by elite-level skill.
The Australian shoot spanned multiple environments, blending iconic motorsport heritage with raw outback character. From high-speed sequences down Bathurt’s Conrod Straight to close-proximity manoeuvers in the back streets of Sydney, each location was selected to push scale and contrast, but none appeared more striking than Broken Hill. Its wide streets, industrial textures and vast open surroundings offered a setting that felt unmistakably Australian while aligning perfectly with Gymkhana’s cinematic identity.
As usual, every run was tightly choreographed. Road closures, camera cars and repeat passes allowed Pastrana to slide the Brataroo millimetres from walls, kerbs and obstacles at speed. The result is familiar Gymkhana theatre: driving that looks reckless, yet is executed with absolute precision.
Still imagery played a key role in documenting the shoot beyond motion. Hillside Auto Staff Videographer Riley Hinton was hired by Hoonigan as a still photographer for the Broken Hill segment, capturing moments that now sit within one of the most influential automotive media productions in the world. It marks a significant milestone for Australian automotive media contributing directly to a global Gymkhana release.
Gymkhana’s arrival in Australia ca`rries weight beyond the spectacle. It represents long-overdue recognition of local locations, talent and car culture on an international stage, whilst raising the bar and proving that world-class automotive storytelling can be produced here, not just consumed.
We are immensely proud of Riley’s involvement and contribution to Gymkhana: Aussie Shred, and excited to see what else his future has in store.
